Heart and Sol ~ Full Moon in Aquarius – August 3rd, 2020

On August 3rd, 2020, the Full Moon in Aquarius will arrive to break through the monotony of bad news and gloomy forecasts.

No matter how novel and unprecedented things may seem, know that there is nothing new under the Sun. The supreme star of the heavens has seen the rise and fall of every kind of human drama play out over millennia. Whenever the shadow of the world looms, the Sun always welcomes you to feel its warm kiss and return to joy.

Joy is not unblinking happiness. Joy is the melody of light that the Sun offers to all life on the planet, what the poet Friedrich Schiller called, beautiful spark of Divinity” and “daughter of Elysium.”

The Sun is the warm-blooded heart of all creation that hums with the music of the spheres. And when the Sun returns to its place of rulership in Leo, humanity’s sense of divine origin  gives rise to qualities of regality, nobility and courage. Returning to a state of radiant self-love is what the heart of Leo season is all about.

On the other side of the zodiac, Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, more distant from the Sun than any of the planets visible to the naked eye.

Aquarius represents an exiled place of forgotten wisdom. So as the Sun reflects upon the Moon in Aquarius, awareness expands into the vastness of empty space and the infinity of stars. The Sun wonders, “are all the stars the suns of their own galaxies?” and “Is Saturn “the ghost of a dead sun” as the Babylonians once described?”

The visions summoned by the Moon in Aquarius transport the Sun from its radiant sphere of importance to see beyond the beyond where its light is only a glimmer.

This celestial reflection offers great wisdom for everyone on earth. As children of the Sun, we all have solipsistic tendencies. We all struggle to see beyond our own conception of the world. And we all struggle with arrogant notions about what we must do to feel important in the world!

But the Full Moon in Aquarius can offer you a much wider vision of reality, both inspiring and humbling to your spirit.

It is important to keep an open heart at this Full Moon because a striking square with Uranus in Taurus will accelerate the feeling of seismic volatility and crisis. Some panic about this or that may emerge, whether there’s any truth behind it or not. But the potential of this lightning strike from Uranus in Taurus is to become liberated from all the mind-numbing spirit rhetoric that’s been keeping you down.

The Sun in Leo is an ode to joy that inspires a celebration of life, something that may seem like an act of courage or defiance in times like these. But the power of this Full Moon in Aquarius will stir the wild places in your heart that relish the opportunity to rebel.

Leo’s courage is inspired by the Aquarian instinct to try something new, philosophically and artistically! Imagine this as a golden opportunity to fearlessly express yourself, letting go of the fear of rejection to explore your potential as a creative being.

Come on girls

You believe in love?

As a perfect soundtrack for this Full Moon’s burst of fearless and creative energies, I invite you to listen to Madonna’s, Express Yourself

‘Cause I’ve got something to sing about it

And it goes something like this…

This is a song that integrates the polarity of Leo and Aquarius so beautifully, for Madonna is a perfect embodiment of the star at the epicenter of the world and the iconoclast that occupies the fringes.

What you need is a big strong hand
To lift you to your higher ground
Make you feel like a queen on a throne…

With her Sun in Leo, Madonna always had star-power. But by the late 80’s, her provocative sexuality had alienated her from status quo religion and politics. She offended many people. But like all great stars, the hate and controversy only seemed to fuel her fire. In a 1990 Op Ed for the New York Times, cultural critic Camille Paglia defended Madonna, calling her the embodiment of feminism for the future:

“Madonna has a far profounder vision of sex…She sees both the animality and the artifice….Feminism says, “No more masks.” Madonna says we are nothing but masks.”

With her Sun in Leo, authentic self-expression was Madonna’s raison d’etre. And in Express Yourself, she shares the pulse of fearless courage required to accomplish that.

Express Yourself is filled with the Sun in Leo’s virtues of dignity and regality, a song that seeks to inspire everyone to uphold themselves as being worthy of great love and fulfillment. Being able to express how you feel is the key to exalted freedom and healthy relationships.

…you’ve got to
Make him express how he feels and maybe
Then you’ll know your love is real

Like a true pop artist, Madonna’s hit songs were woven into cinematic music videos, adding an iconic depth. As a testament to the value placed upon the visual art, in 1989, Express Yourself, was the most expensive music video ever made.

Directed by David Fincher, Express Yourself, was a five-minute homage to Fritz Lang’s 1927 Metropolis. The original film takes place in a futuristic art-deco city where an elite society of privileged aristocrats live on top of a mountain of subterranean labor.

In 2020, any long-shadowed sci-fi dystopia seems to resonate with the mood. But the Sun in Leo lightens things up, asking you to hear the pop of champagne bubbles over the grind of machines. Madonna’s hyper-sexualized pastiche of Expressionist cinema and old Hollywood glamour concludes with the epigraph:

This is a divine message from the Sun, the light that brings all your talents and knowledge into being. Consider that in astrology, to know your Sun sign is to know how the Sun’s light shines through you. Hiding, avoiding and lying about who you are emits no warmth at all. But expressing yourself is radiant, the light of heart and sol.

So at this Full Moon in Aquarius, remember that the light of self is a gift meant to be offered to others. And when you express yourself, you pulse with joy for all.

Much Love,

Rachel
